Adding Alternative Text to Figures or Text Elements

Alternative text is associated with either a non-text element, like a figure, or a text element, like a paragraph, to provide the same essential information as the elements. The screen reader uses the text alternative accessibility requirement to render information on the meaning of the element content.
Alternative Text for Paragraphs
Indicates an additional text used to describe the function of a paragraph.
Alternative Text for Figures
Specifies the content and function of functional images for the screen reader to read the same information as the images to which it is attached.
Alternative Text for Table Data, Column Header, and Row Header
Specifies the content and function of functional images for the screen reader to read the same information as the images to which it is attached.

To add alternative text to a figure, a paragraph, a table data, column header, or row header:

  1. On the left side of the screen, go to RULES and select the matched figure, paragraph rule, table data, column header, or row header from the document hierarchy.
  2. Go to the PROPERTIES panel on the right side of the screen.
  3. In the Alternative Text field, enter descriptive alternative text for the image or the paragraph.
Note: The Alternative Text field also lets you set up a variable value. To set up a variable value, make sure you Set Variable in RULES. Then manually add the variable name in the Alternative Text section of the element:

For more information see: Setting Variables.

  4. To use the metadata text as alternative text for a figure, select the figure in the RULES panel on the left and select the Use metadata as alternative text check box.
